The result of many years of anthropological fieldwork, cross-cultural studies, experimental research and direct experiences among the Hivars of Ecuador and the Konibs of Peru.
What Yogananda did for Hinduism and D.T. What Suzuki did to Zen, Michael Harner did to shamanism. He founded the Foundation for Shamanic Studies and introduced shamanism into modern life. The book is the result of many years of anthropological field work, cross-cultural studies, experimental research and direct experiences among the Hivara of Ecuador and the Koniba of Peru.
In 1956, he traveled to the Amazon, where he encountered shamanism rooted in everyday life among the Hivari. A few years later, in the Peruvian Amazon, where he wanted to learn about their spiritual system from the Konibs, he tried the ayahuasca drink, which changed his life. After returning to the Hivars, he studied psychedelic shamanism, as they trusted him that the true light of reality could only be seen by consuming psychedelic plants.
After a thorough study of shamanism, he and the Foundation spread knowledge about shamanic methods based on drumming, visualization and other techniques without the use of psychoactive substances.
